e-Passport in India: Complete guide on applying, eligibility, and major benefits

India begins issuing e-passports: Here’s how they work, key features, and how to apply
India has officially rolled out e-passports, a new-generation travel document that citizens can now apply for at select passport offices across the country. These passports were first introduced on April 1, 2024, as part of a pilot project by the Ministry of External Affairs. At present, only a limited number of centers are equipped to issue them, but the government has announced plans to extend the service nationwide in the coming months.
One quick way to spot an e-passport is the gold-colored emblem printed on the front cover, just below the word Passport.
What is an e-passport?
An e-passport is essentially an upgraded version of the regular passport, combining physical and digital security features. It contains an RFID chip and antenna that securely store both personal and biometric data, such as a digital photo and fingerprints.
On the outside, it looks like a standard passport but can be recognized by the small gold biometric symbol on the front cover. Importantly, the e-passport is not replacing the traditional one — it’s an advanced option designed to improve security, reduce fraud, and speed up immigration checks for international travelers.
