India Restates Backing for Nepal’s Fresh Interim Government Headed by Prime Minister Sushila Karki

New Delhi [India], September 19 (ANI): India has reaffirmed its unwavering support to Nepal following the formation of the new interim government led by Prime Minister Sushila Karki. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that India is prepared to collaborate closely with Nepal for the welfare and development of the people of both neighboring nations. MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal made these remarks during the weekly press briefing on Friday.
When asked about Nepal's new interim government, Jaiswal said, "We welcomed the formation of the new interim government in Nepal. Subsequently, our Prime Minister had a telephonic discussion with Prime Minister Karki. During this conversation, we reiterated our firm support to Nepal and assured assistance in maintaining peace and stability. As a development partner, a fellow democracy, and a close neighbor, India will provide all necessary support to help Nepal restore peace and stability as quickly as possible. We will continue working together for the progress and prosperity of the people of both countries."
On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Nepal’s Interim PM Sushila Karki over the phone. During the call, PM Modi expressed condolences for lives lost during recent protests in Nepal and reaffirmed India’s commitment to strengthening the special relationship between the two nations.
In response, PM Karki thanked PM Modi for India’s strong support and reciprocated the sentiment, expressing her desire to enhance bilateral ties. According to the MEA, PM Modi also extended greetings for Nepal’s upcoming National Day, and both leaders agreed to maintain regular communication.
“The Rt. Hon. Prime Minister Karki conveyed her best wishes to Prime Minister Modi on his 75th birthday and appreciated his message of solidarity. She emphasized that responding to the recent Gen Z-led movement, holding elections will remain the government’s top priority, with a strong focus on accountable, transparent, and corruption-free governance, reflecting the aspirations of young people. Prime Minister Modi assured full support and cooperation aligned with Nepal’s priorities,” stated the Nepalese Foreign Ministry.
Commenting on Nepal’s elections, slated for next year, Jaiswal added, “India stands ready to continue working closely with Nepal to further strengthen the special ties between our countries and support efforts to restore peace, stability, and development for the Nepalese people.”
Sushila Karki, Nepal’s first female Chief Justice and now the country’s first woman Prime Minister, is supported by a Gen Z-led movement that has reshaped Nepal’s political scene. The so-called Gen Z revolution led to 74 deaths when police resorted to force against protests targeting the government of KP Sharma Oli, who is currently in hiding.
Interim Prime Minister Karki will serve until early March 2026, when elections are scheduled to select a new executive head. The September 8 protests, largely organized by Gen Z activists, were driven by widespread frustration over corruption, lack of accountability, and perceived failures of political leaders, compounded by a government-imposed social media ban.
Karki’s appointment followed collective support from protesters, who endorsed her as their candidate for the interim post due to her reputation for integrity and independence, after Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned amid widespread demonstrations.
