IIT aspirants get relief as 75% Class XII marks rule eased for CBSE students

IIT Aspirants Get Major Relief as Students Below 75% in CBSE Class XII Allowed to Join Counselling
Conditional Relief for JEE Advanced Qualifiers
In a major relief for several JEE Advanced 2026 qualifiers, the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee has allowed students who are currently below the required Class XII marks threshold to participate in the IIT admission process. The decision is especially important for CBSE students who have challenged their board results and are waiting for revised scorecards after applying for verification or re-evaluation.
IIT Roorkee Opens Counselling Route
IIT Roorkee, which conducted JEE Advanced 2026, has clarified that such candidates will not be stopped from filling choices during counselling. They will be allowed to participate in the seat allocation process on the basis of their JEE Advanced rank. However, their final admission will remain conditional until they submit a revised Class XII scorecard meeting the eligibility criteria.
Revised Scorecard Deadline Fixed
According to the announcement, affected students must submit their revised scorecard by July 15, 2026. The revised marks must show that the candidate satisfies the required Class XII eligibility condition. If the student meets the eligibility requirement within the deadline, admission will be granted to the seat allotted at the end of the fourth round.
Eligibility Rule Still Remains
The decision does not mean that the 75 per cent rule has been removed. For General, OBC-NCL and GEN-EWS candidates, the minimum requirement remains 75 per cent aggregate marks in Class XII or equivalent examination. For SC, ST and PwD candidates, the minimum requirement remains 65 per cent. Candidates may also qualify if they fall within the top 20 percentile of their respective boards.
Relief Without Rule Relaxation
IIT Roorkee’s decision is therefore a procedural relief rather than a full relaxation of the eligibility criteria. Students below the required marks can take part in counselling for now, but they must eventually prove that they meet the eligibility rules. If they fail to submit the revised scorecard by the July 15 deadline, they will not get final admission to the allotted IIT seat.
CBSE Results Triggered Concern
The issue gained attention after CBSE Class XII results were declared on May 13. Many students and parents expressed dissatisfaction with the marks awarded, claiming that the scores were lower than expected. Several students applied for access to answer sheets, verification of marks and re-evaluation, hoping that their final scores would increase after review.
JEE Advanced Qualifiers Faced Uncertainty
The situation became more serious for students who had qualified JEE Advanced but were short of the Class XII eligibility requirement. For these candidates, even a small difference in board marks could decide whether they would be able to join an IIT. Many students feared that they could lose their seat before the re-evaluation process was completed.
Student Pressure Led to Action
Over the past few days, students and parents raised strong demands for relief through social media and other platforms. Many argued that candidates should not be punished for possible evaluation errors while their marks were still under review. The growing pressure pushed the issue into public discussion and forced authorities to provide a clearer response.
One-Time Waiver Was Not Granted
Earlier, IIT Roorkee had indicated that a complete one-time waiver of the eligibility criteria was not possible. The institute pointed out that students from 36 different boards had appeared for JEE Advanced. Relaxing the rule only for concerns related to one board could create fairness issues for candidates from other boards.
Balanced Administrative Decision
The latest decision appears to be a balanced approach. IIT Roorkee has not removed the eligibility rule, but it has allowed affected students to remain in the counselling process until their revised marks are available. This helps protect students from being excluded too early while also maintaining the admission standards already announced.
Seat Allocation Based on Rank
Candidates who are allowed to participate conditionally will receive seat allocation according to their JEE Advanced rank and filled choices. This means they can continue with the normal counselling process like other qualified candidates. However, the seat will become final only after their revised Class XII marks satisfy the required eligibility condition.
Importance of July 15 Deadline
The July 15 deadline is very important for affected students. Those who have applied for CBSE re-evaluation must closely monitor their revised marks and ensure timely submission of the updated scorecard. Missing the deadline may result in losing the allotted seat, even if the student later becomes eligible.
Pressure on CBSE Review Process
The decision may also increase pressure on CBSE to complete the verification and re-evaluation process quickly. A large number of students have reportedly applied to access answer sheets across multiple subjects. Since IIT admission is now linked to revised scorecards, delays could seriously affect students’ academic futures.
Emotional Relief for Aspirants
For many IIT aspirants, this announcement brings emotional relief. Preparing for JEE Advanced often requires years of hard work, coaching, sacrifice and intense pressure. A student who qualifies JEE Advanced but falls short of the board marks requirement by a few marks faces a deeply stressful situation. The conditional relief gives such students another chance.
Board Marks Debate Returns
The controversy has also restarted the debate over the role of Class XII marks in IIT admissions. While JEE Advanced measures entrance exam performance, board marks remain an additional eligibility filter. Supporters say the rule ensures strong school-level academic performance, while critics argue that disputed evaluation can unfairly affect deserving candidates.
Counselling Participation Not Final Admission
Students must clearly understand that participation in counselling does not automatically mean admission. They can fill choices and receive seat allocation, but final admission depends on submitting valid proof of eligibility. Therefore, candidates must follow both JoSAA counselling instructions and CBSE re-evaluation updates carefully.
Practical Relief for Deserving Candidates
The decision helps ensure that students who may become eligible after re-evaluation are not pushed out of the process in advance. Without this relief, many candidates could have lost the chance to secure an IIT seat simply because the counselling timeline moved faster than the board review process.
Families Welcome the Move
The announcement is likely to be welcomed by students and families who were worried about losing admission opportunities. IIT preparation often involves major financial and emotional investment. For families, the possibility of losing an IIT seat due to disputed board marks was a major concern.
Need for Better Coordination
The situation also shows the need for better coordination between school boards and national admission authorities. When board re-evaluation schedules and counselling timelines overlap, students face uncertainty. A clearer system for provisional participation and document updates can help reduce confusion in future admission cycles.
Relief Keeps IIT Dreams Alive
Overall, IIT Roorkee’s announcement has kept the hopes of many JEE Advanced qualifiers alive. The decision gives students time to submit corrected marks while maintaining the existing eligibility norms. For aspirants waiting for revised CBSE scorecards, this conditional relief could make the difference between losing an opportunity and securing an IIT seat.
