Henil, Kundu power India to maiden victory; West Indies cruise past Tanzania in U-19 World Cup

India and West Indies Register Winning Starts at 2026 Men’s Under-19 World Cup
Five-time champions India and traditional powerhouses West Indies opened their campaigns at the 2026 ICC Men’s Under-19 World Cup with contrasting yet convincing victories on the opening day of Group D action. India overcame early nerves and rain interruptions to defeat the United States of America by six wickets via the Duckworth–Lewis–Stern (DLS) method, while West Indies cruised to a five-wicket win over Tanzania in Windhoek.
Both matches underlined the importance of discipline, adaptability, and composure in youth cricket, with standout individual performances playing decisive roles in setting the tone for the tournament.
Henil Patel’s Five-For Sets Up India’s First Win
India’s victory against the USA was built on a brilliant spell of fast bowling by Henil Patel, whose figures of 5 for 16 dismantled the American batting lineup and restricted them to 107 all out. Henil, a right-arm quick who models his game on former South African great Dale Steyn, showcased pace, bounce, and accuracy to claim his maiden five-wicket haul at a World Cup stage.
Henil struck as early as his first over, using extra bounce to force opener Amrinder Gill into edging behind to second slip. His early breakthrough immediately put the USA on the back foot and set the tone for India’s disciplined bowling effort.
Despite the early loss, USA openers Sahil Garg and wicketkeeper Arjun Mahesh attempted to stabilize the innings. The duo showed resilience on a tricky surface, even though run-scoring proved difficult. Their 28-run partnership off 45 balls was more about survival than momentum, but it provided brief resistance before Garg fell attempting to counterattack.
Middle-Order Resistance but Regular Breakthroughs
India maintained pressure through tight lines and smart bowling changes. Henil returned to remove USA captain Utkarsh Srivastava, who misjudged a delivery and dragged the ball onto his stumps. In the same over, Henil claimed his third wicket as the set Mahesh sliced one to deep third, leaving the USA reeling.
The introduction of spin paid immediate dividends for India. Left-arm spinner Khilan Patel struck in his first over, tempting Amogh Arepally into a mistimed shot to cover. However, USA found some stability through Adnit Jhamb and Nitish Sudini, who put together the highest partnership of the innings—30 runs in 8.5 overs.
Sudini, who eventually top-scored with 36, showed intent by attempting big shots while also rotating the strike effectively. When spin failed to break the stand, India reverted to pace, and RS Ambrish provided the breakthrough by inducing an edge from Jhamb with a well-directed length ball.
Sharp Fielding and a Dominant Finish
India’s fielding standards were exemplary and played a key role in restricting the USA. A moment of brilliance from Vihaan Malhotra resulted in a crucial run-out when he dived to stop a shot at cover and followed it up with a direct hit at the non-striker’s end to dismiss Adit Kappa.
With wickets tumbling, Sudini tried to accelerate the scoring, but Henil returned to wrap up the innings. He bounced out Sabrish Prasad, cleaned up Rishabh Shimpi the very next ball, and briefly stood on the brink of a hat-trick. Although he did not get another opportunity, his spell ensured the USA were bowled out for a modest total.
India were set a revised DLS target of 99 in a rain-affected chase, which on paper appeared straightforward. However, conditions and early wickets turned the chase into a test of temperament.
Rain, Nerves, and Early Wickets in the Chase
India’s chase began in disjointed fashion, with players forced off the field even before the first ball due to rain. When play resumed, captain Ayush Mhatre survived an early scare after cutting a ball straight to point, where a chance was spilled.
The reprieve was short-lived for India’s top order. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi fell attempting an aggressive shot, dragging the ball onto his stumps off Ritvik Appidi, who finished with figures of 2 for 24. Shortly after, Vedant Trivedi was dismissed following sustained pressure, leaving India three wickets down inside six overs.
Another rain delay, caused by lightning and a wet outfield, further disrupted momentum. When play finally resumed after nearly two hours, Appidi struck again to remove Trivedi, increasing the pressure on the Indian camp.
Captain Falls, Pressure Mounts
With drizzle still in the air and the asking rate climbing under DLS calculations, Mhatre attempted to break free. He managed a top-edged boundary but fell soon after while trying to hook a short ball, brilliantly caught by Gill running in from deep fine leg.
At four wickets down, India were suddenly in unfamiliar territory. The USA sensed an opportunity, and the match hung in the balance as tension mounted on the sidelines.
Abhigyan Kundu Anchors the Chase
Enter Abhigyan Kundu, who brought calm to the crease with his trademark poise. The right-hander immediately announced his intent with a sublime drive through cover point, followed by back-to-back on-drives that showcased his timing and balance.
Kundu, who had arrived at the World Cup in red-hot form after scoring a double century in the Under-19 Asia Cup, played a mature innings beyond his years. He was well supported initially by Vihaan Malhotra, though the latter fell edging behind soon after.
Undeterred, Kundu continued to control the chase, rotating the strike and punishing loose deliveries. He found an able partner in Kanishk Chouhan, and the pair ensured there were no further hiccups.
In the 18th over, Kundu lofted Kappa straight down the ground to bring the target within touching distance. He then sealed the victory in emphatic fashion, launching a six over long-on to finish unbeaten on 42 off 41 balls, guiding India to their first win of the tournament.
West Indies Dominate Tanzania in Windhoek
Earlier in the day, West Indies made a strong statement in Windhoek by defeating Tanzania by five wickets in the first completed match of the tournament.
After winning the toss, West Indies opted to bowl but found early breakthroughs hard to come by. Tanzania openers Dylan Thakrar and Darpan Jobanputra displayed patience and discipline, frustrating the Caribbean new-ball bowlers with a solid 53-run opening stand.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 14th over when medium pacer Jonathan Van Lange dismissed Jobanputra, opening the door for West Indies to strike back strongly.
Collapse Triggered by Belle and Lawes
Seamer Shaquan Belle proved instrumental in turning the match. After taking the catch to break the opening stand, Belle dismissed Thakrar in the next over, ran out Ayaan Shariff, and removed Augustino Mwamele, claiming three wickets in quick succession.
The middle and lower order offered little resistance as left-arm wristspinner Vitel Lawes ran through the lineup, finishing with figures of 3 for 23. Supported by McKenzie and Andrew, West Indies bowled Tanzania out for 122 in the 34th over.
Francis and Andrew Ease the Chase
Chasing a modest target, West Indies suffered an early setback when Zachary Carter was dismissed in the fourth over. However, any hopes of a Tanzanian fightback were quickly extinguished by a commanding partnership between Tanez Francis and Jewel Andrew.
Francis top-scored with a fluent 52, while Andrew contributed a composed 44, the pair adding 80 runs for the second wicket. Their partnership ensured West Indies remained firmly in control of the chase.
Although four wickets fell in a brief middle-order wobble, the low target meant there was never any real danger. West Indies eventually crossed the line with 29 overs to spare, sealing a dominant start to their World Cup campaign.
Tournament Momentum Builds
India’s hard-earned win highlighted their depth, resilience, and ability to adapt under pressure, while West Indies’ comprehensive victory reinforced their reputation as one of the most formidable teams in youth cricket.
As the 2026 Men’s Under-19 World Cup progresses, both teams will look to build on these performances. India will aim for greater stability at the top of the order, while West Indies will seek consistency across departments as they target a deep run in the tournament.
With early drama, standout performances, and contrasting match narratives, the tournament has begun on an exciting note, promising compelling cricket in the days to come.
