GST 2025 Reforms Live Updates: Lower rates make food items, electronics, and cars more affordable

Today’s GST Rate Cut Live Updates: Starting September 22, prices of a wide range of goods — from kitchen essentials and medicines to consumer electronics and automobiles — will come down as the revised GST rates on nearly 375 items take effect. The GST Council, made up of the Centre and states, cleared the tax reduction, with the rollout coinciding with the first day of Navratri.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had earlier said the reforms are expected to inject ₹2 lakh crore into the economy, leaving households with more disposable income that would otherwise be spent on taxes.
PM Modi hails reforms as ‘GST savings festival’
Addressing the nation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the rate cuts as the beginning of a “GST bachat utsav” (savings festival).
“From the first day of Navratri, the country will take a significant step towards Atmanirbhar Bharat. With tomorrow’s sunrise, the next generation of GST reforms will be implemented. This savings festival, combined with income tax relief, will mean a double bonanza for people,” Modi said.
He added that the reforms will benefit the poor, middle class, new middle class, farmers, women, youth, traders, and shopkeepers, making goods more affordable across the board.
Congress accuses PM of ‘hogging credit’
The Congress hit back, accusing the Prime Minister of taking “sole credit” for the changes to the GST framework. On Sunday, the party said the reforms were inadequate, noting that key issues remain unresolved — including states’ demand for a five-year extension of GST compensation.
Calling the amendments “a band-aid after inflicting deep wounds,” the opposition said the government should apologise for earlier levies on essential goods.
