Bengaluru’s quirks: Techie tries Rapido stint for fun, internet can’t keep cal

Bengaluru once again proves why it’s unlike any other city, with its trademark mix of tech life and hustle culture. A recent Reddit post has gone viral after a commuter shared a rather unexpected experience while booking a Rapido ride.
As per the post, the user booked a Rapido from their office to BTM Layout, only to discover that the assigned rider was actually a systems engineer employed at a tech company. The surprise didn’t end there—the engineer revealed it was his first-ever ride on the app.
The commuter explained that the techie had dropped off a friend near the office and, on a sudden impulse, decided to register as a Rapido captain on his way back home to make a little extra money.
“This can only happen in Bengaluru,” the post read, highlighting the city’s spirit of experimentation and side hustles.
The story triggered a wave of amusement and admiration online, with social media users noting that it perfectly reflects Bengaluru’s unique work culture, where professionals balance their main jobs while dabbling in gig work.
One user commented, “Why not? Earning a little extra with hardly any effort makes total sense.”
Another recalled a similar experience in Hyderabad: “One Rapido rider works in the same office building as mine. He picks up rides while commuting to cover fuel and maintenance costs—practically no extra effort.”
A third user weighed in more practically: “Working two jobs is common. Getting paid to sit in traffic either way is just smart. People only find it surprising because they think some jobs are beneath others.”
Others stressed normalising gig work alongside corporate jobs: “Side hustles should be accepted in India. Folks act shocked when salaried employees do gig work for extra income.” One commenter even joked: “Imagine booking a Rapido and finding your boss waiting to pick you up!”
