WA NAPLAN 2026 Results Show Strong Year 9 Performance but Raise Concerns Over Year 3 Students

Western Australia's latest NAPLAN 2026 results have presented a mixed picture of student achievement, with Year 9 students outperforming the national average in every assessment category, while Year 3 students recorded concerning results in numeracy and writing. The findings have sparked fresh discussions about the challenges faced by younger students and the need for stronger support during the early years of schooling.

This year, around 1.2 million students across Australia participated in the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN), which evaluates students in reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy. The results provide schools, teachers, and governments with valuable insights into student learning and academic progress.

For Western Australia, the latest figures reveal encouraging signs at the secondary school level, particularly among Year 9 students, but also highlight significant learning gaps among children in primary school.

Year 9 Students Lead the Way

One of the biggest positives from this year's results is the performance of Year 9 students, who emerged as the state's strongest-performing group.

According to the results, WA Year 9 students scored above the national average in all five NAPLAN assessment categories, including reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy. Their consistent performance suggests that students are making steady academic progress as they move through secondary school.

Education experts believe these results reflect years of learning and support provided by schools, teachers, and families. Strong Year 9 outcomes are particularly important because they demonstrate that students are developing the literacy and numeracy skills needed for senior secondary education and future careers.

The performance also positions Western Australia favourably compared to many other parts of the country, reinforcing confidence in the state's education system at the secondary level.

Year 3 Results Raise Serious Concerns

While the achievements of Year 9 students have been welcomed, the results for Year 3 students have become the biggest concern in this year's report.

The most worrying statistic is that 39.9% of Year 3 students were placed in the bottom two achievement bands for numeracy, classified as either "needs additional support" or "developing." This means that nearly four out of every ten students are struggling with basic mathematical concepts at an early stage of their education.

Experts say numeracy skills developed during primary school are essential because they form the foundation for more advanced mathematics and problem-solving abilities in later years.

Another area of concern is Year 3 writing, where student performance declined by 1.7% compared with last year's results. The fall represents the largest decrease recorded among all year levels and assessment categories in Western Australia.

Education specialists warn that weaker writing skills at an early age can affect learning across multiple subjects, making it more difficult for students to communicate ideas, complete assessments, and build confidence in the classroom.

Year 5 and Year 7 Show Mixed Outcomes

The report also highlights mixed performances among students in Year 5 and Year 7.

Overall, Year 5 students scored below the national average across all NAPLAN categories. However, there was one encouraging improvement, with grammar and punctuation scores increasing by 0.8% compared with last year. Although the improvement was relatively small, it indicates gradual progress in language skills.

Similarly, Year 7 students ranked below the national average in most categories, but they performed well in spelling. WA students recorded an average spelling score of 543.1, slightly above the national average of 541.6. In addition, Year 7 numeracy improved by 0.7%, suggesting some positive momentum as students transition into secondary education.

Despite these gains, education experts believe further improvements are needed to ensure students perform consistently across all learning areas.

Understanding the NAPLAN Assessment

NAPLAN is Australia's national assessment program designed to measure students' literacy and numeracy skills at key stages of their education. Students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9 complete the assessments each year.

The tests measure achievement in five key areas:

Reading
Writing
Spelling
Grammar and Punctuation
Numeracy

Instead of ranking students solely by marks, NAPLAN also places them into four proficiency levels:

Needs Additional Support
Developing
Strong
Exceeding

These categories help teachers and parents better understand a student's academic progress and identify areas where additional support may be required.

Education Minister Calls Results Encouraging

Western Australia's Education Minister, Sabine Winton, described the Year 9 results as an encouraging sign for the state's education system.

She said the true measure of educational success is not simply the scores students achieve but the academic growth they make throughout their schooling. According to the Minister, the strong Year 9 performance demonstrates that schools are helping students continue improving year after year.

Ms Winton said the results show the education system is successfully supporting students' development over time and credited schools and teachers for helping Year 9 students reach above-average national performance.

However, she acknowledged that Year 3 numeracy remains the state's greatest concern.

The Minister noted that schools are increasingly dealing with children entering classrooms with developmental delays and more complex learning needs, making early intervention more important than ever.

She suggested these broader challenges are affecting not only Western Australia but education systems across the country.

Opposition Calls for Immediate Action

Opposition education spokesperson Liam Staltari also expressed concern about the Year 3 results, warning that the findings should serve as an early warning rather than be overlooked.

According to Mr Staltari, students who struggle during the early years of primary school often continue facing academic difficulties in later grades if they do not receive adequate support.

He argued that the government should invest more in helping younger students build strong literacy and numeracy foundations before learning gaps become more difficult to close.

Mr Staltari also highlighted concerns about teacher shortages, classroom workloads, and student-to-teacher ratios, saying these issues could be limiting the amount of individual attention available to children who need additional assistance.

Why Early Learning Matters

Education researchers have consistently found that the first years of schooling are critical in shaping long-term academic success.

Students who develop strong reading, writing, and numeracy skills during primary school are generally more likely to perform well in secondary education and beyond.

The latest NAPLAN figures reinforce the importance of identifying learning challenges early so that schools can provide targeted support before students fall further behind.

Programs such as small-group learning, additional classroom support, early literacy initiatives, and mathematics intervention programs are often considered effective strategies for improving student outcomes.

What the Results Mean for Parents and Schools

For parents, the NAPLAN results provide useful information about their child's academic progress and areas where extra support may be beneficial.

Schools can also use the findings to review teaching strategies, identify learning trends, and allocate resources to areas requiring improvement.

While the results should not be viewed as the only measure of a student's ability, they remain an important tool for monitoring educational progress across Australia.

Conclusion

The WA NAPLAN 2026 results present both encouraging achievements and important challenges for Western Australia's education system. Year 9 students have demonstrated strong academic performance by scoring above the national average across all assessment areas, highlighting the success of ongoing learning throughout secondary school.

At the same time, the results have drawn attention to the significant challenges facing Year 3 students, particularly in numeracy and writing, where many children continue to struggle. Both the state government and the opposition agree that these early learning issues require close attention to ensure students receive the support they need.

As schools analyse the latest findings and prepare for the next academic year, the focus is likely to remain on strengthening foundational literacy and numeracy skills while building on the impressive progress achieved by older students. The 2026 NAPLAN results ultimately serve as both a measure of success and a reminder that continued investment in early education remains essential for improving outcomes across all year levels.
