Dalip Tahil on Aamir Khan’s Stardom: ‘Don’t Credit His Success to Family Background—He Carved His Own Path

Aamir Khan’s debut in Indian cinema remains unforgettable for film enthusiasts. With his breakout performance in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak—a contemporary retelling of Shakespeare’s classic love tragedy Romeo and Juliet—he captured the nation’s imagination and became an overnight sensation.

In a recent interaction with Galatta India, veteran actor Dalip Tahil, who portrayed Aamir’s father in the film, reflected on witnessing the actor’s rapid rise to fame. Tahil emphasized that Aamir’s success was never about his lineage but rather his own conviction and dedication.
“Aamir carried immense confidence even in those early days,” Tahil recalled. “I remember Nasir Saab (the film’s producer) mentioning that many character actors had turned down the father’s role because they couldn’t envision themselves in it at that stage of their careers. For me, it was never a question. I didn’t view it simply as a ‘father’s role’—the character had such depth and strength that playing it felt like a privilege, not a compromise.”
